WHY I AM GRATEFUL TO GOD FOR FAR EASTERN KINDERGARTEN

As a follower of Christ, I long that my sons will also one day deny themselves, take up their cross, and do the same.  I have many responsibilities as a father, not least of which is to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.  My greatest delight would be to see them “rejoice with trembling” before Yahweh (Ps 2:11).

However, communicating with young children is not my strong suit.  Thankfully, God has gifted His Church with people of various spiritual gifts so that the whole body may be built up.  And as a former teacher familiar with what sound pedagogy looks like in the classroom and in school, I have been very impressed with how children are taught and guided in FEK (one son graduated from FEK, another is enjoying the FEK-experience now). God has blessed this kindergarten with gifted teachers with caring hearts, and I am very grateful that my sons can benefit this blessing.

Notwithstanding the sound education practices, what I most treasure about FEK is that it operates on Biblical principles, and what it teaches accords with sound doctrine. Let me explain.

I have been blessed to attend more than one FEK Annual Concert, and what mesmerised me was how the Bible stories acted out in plays were punctiliously faithful to the Biblical narrative – even in small, often-neglected, but important details. The children have been spared many common errors perpetuated by careless Bible storytelling. They are thus able to learn deep truths about God from the Bible stories they hear and act out – truths that will stay with them for life.

Moreover, I have become increasingly convinced that the bulk of one’s theological beliefs are mostly settled before one’s teen years. Thereafter, to change one’s basic doctrinal stance would require deliberate study and reasoning. That makes it all the more crucial to accurately teach our children Gospel truths when they are young. And given that complex theological truths are built layer by layer from simple doctrines, it is vital our children are taught straight truths in their formative years. To my mind, it is beyond precious that my sons learnt/are learning this at FEK.

In short, for the love the teachers have for my sons, for their gifts in teaching young hearts, for the eternal truths that are being taught in FEK – I am deeply grateful to God.

Pastor Tan Soon Yong is the pastor of The Fisherman of Christ Fellowship. His youngest son, Jerico, is currently in K2 and his older son, Samuel, graduated from FEK in 2016.

Navigating adulthood is no small challenge, but God has not left us without instruction.

Join us in a series of Young Adult Talks this year, as we explore how we may live as pilgrims in a world full of distraction – Passing the Time of our Sojourning Here in Fear (1 Peter 1:17).

Please save the dates, and stay tuned for more information about each talk and the speakers who will be sharing God’s Word with us!
